TikTok caption, bio, and hashtag limits, explained
TikTok gives you a lot of room — most creators still shouldn't use most of it.
Updated August 2026
TikTok's caption limit has grown considerably over the years — from an original 300 characters, up through 2,200, to today's 4,000-character ceiling. That's more room than almost any other major platform's caption field. But like Instagram, the number that actually shapes how your caption performs isn't the ceiling — it's how much shows before someone has to tap to read more.
What's actually visible: ~100–150 characters
In the main feed, TikTok shows only the first 100–150 characters or so of a caption before a "more" link appears. Most viewers are already watching the video and won't tap it. That means, just like on Instagram, your opening line is carrying almost all the weight — a strong hook in the first sentence matters more than anything you write after it.
Every TikTok limit in one place
| Field | Limit |
|---|---|
| Caption | 4,000 characters |
| Caption visible before "more" | ~100–150 characters |
| Bio | 80 characters |
| Username | 24 characters |
| Display name | 30 characters |
| Comment | 150 characters |
| Direct message | ~1,000 characters |
Why 4,000 characters doesn't mean you should use them
TikTok's own search and discovery systems have grown to rely more on captions as searchable text, which is part of why the limit kept expanding — a longer, keyword-rich caption can genuinely help a video surface in TikTok's search results. But that's a different goal from engagement on the For You Page, where short, punchy captions still tend to perform better. The practical approach most creators land on: a strong short hook up front, with the option to add more descriptive, searchable text afterward for anyone who taps through — rather than writing 4,000 characters by default.
Hashtags and the caption budget
Hashtags, @mentions, and emoji all count against the same caption limit — there's no separate hashtag allowance. TikTok's algorithm has also shifted toward understanding a video's actual content (audio, visuals, on-screen text) rather than leaning heavily on hashtags for discovery, so stacking in 20+ tags tends to waste caption space without a matching benefit. A small set of specific, relevant hashtags generally outperforms a long generic list.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters can a TikTok caption be?
Up to 4,000 characters. Only the first 100–150 characters or so show before a "more" link, so the opening line still does most of the work.
How many characters is a TikTok bio?
80 characters — the tightest bio limit of any major social platform, so every word needs to earn its place.
How many characters can a TikTok comment be?
150 characters per comment, whether it's a top-level comment or a reply.
Do hashtags count toward the caption limit?
Yes. Hashtags, @mentions, and emoji all count as part of the same caption character limit, not a separate allowance.
