A standard post on X is capped at 280 characters. That's been the free-tier limit since it doubled from the original 140 back in 2017, and it still applies to every post, reply, and quote post from a non-Premium account. The confusing part isn't the number — it's what counts as a "character."
What counts, and what doesn't
Letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation each count as one character, exactly as you'd expect. A few things behave differently:
- Links — any URL is automatically shortened and always counts as exactly 23 characters, no matter how long the real address is. A 90-character link still only costs you 23.
- Emoji — most emoji are stored as multi-byte Unicode characters and count as 2 characters each, not 1. A caption with five emoji can eat 10+ characters before you've written a word.
- Mentions and hashtags — an @username or #hashtag counts character-for-character like normal text; there's no shortcut applied to these.
- Attached photos, video, GIFs, and polls — these don't cost anything against your 280, since they're attached media rather than text in the post body.
X Premium: up to 25,000 characters
Paid X Premium subscribers can publish long-form posts of up to roughly 25,000 characters. In the timeline, these still preview at 280 characters with a "Show more" link — readers have to tap in to see the rest. For most everyday posts, writing inside the free 280-character limit still gets read more reliably, since the preview is what shows up in a scrolling feed.

Threads vs. Premium long posts
If you're not subscribed to Premium and need more than 280 characters, threading is the standard workaround: chain multiple posts together by replying to your own post. There's no cap on how many posts a thread can contain, and threads often get read more carefully than a single long block of text, since each post is a self-contained unit someone can react to on its own.
