What the score means
Flesch Reading Ease runs from 0 to 100 — higher means easier to read. Most general-audience writing (news articles, blog posts) scores somewhere between 60 and 70. Academic papers and legal text often score below 30. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level translates the same underlying math into a U.S. school grade, which is often the more intuitive number to aim for: most popular nonfiction and journalism targets roughly a 7th–9th grade level, regardless of the actual audience's education, simply because plainer writing is easier for everyone to read quickly.
